Interview with the Founders of Dispoze-A-Bowl®
This may be the only product out there that has it’s own rhythm section. And not only are they hard-working entrepreneurs, they are personally very nice guys (if you’re new to knifetwister records, we don’t interview dicks).
The Dispoze-a-Bowl® smoking pipe represents a distinctive offering in the smoking accessory market, positioned as an economical, disposable, yet potentially reusable alternative to conventional pipes crafted from materials such as glass, wood, or corn cob. Its fundamental appeal lies in its emphasis on convenience, hygiene, portability, and affordability. The product's construction from food-grade ivory board and a stainless-steel bowl underscores considerations for material safety and recyclability. Its design facilitates easy assembly from a flat-packed form and incorporates a "carburetor" for managing airflow, aiming to optimize the user's experience.
We had a chance to catch up with CEO Rob Coscia (inventor with 3 patents, former operator of M&R Deliveries, a NY based truck delivery service), and COO Mike Caldarella (former operator of Tito’s Burritos & Wings, a multi-unit quick service restaurant chain in NJ).
Available on Amazon or better yet, directly through the company, - cut out the middleman. And you can support a small, local business directly rather than paying for Jeff Bezos to go to Mars or whatever.

What has been the reception since launching Dispoze-A-Bowl in 2020?
Well, we launched right as the pandemic was spiking, so we weren’t able to get the product in front of large groups of people at first, but then as things calmed down and we started to get eyes on the product, the reception has been overwhelmingly positive.
How would you define "innovation" in the context of cannabis pipes in general, and more specifically Dispoze-A-Bowl?
For a smoking pipe to be innovative it would need to offer the user something both beneficial and previously unseen in the marketplace. The central innovation underpinning the Dispoze-a-Bowl® is its dual functionality, presenting a "disposable-yet-reusable" paradigm. While the product's name, "Dispoze-a-Bowl," strongly implies a single-use item, its design and marketing consistently highlight its durability, enabling it to be discarded after a single use, or used at length depending on user preference. Additionally, The Dispoze-a-Bowl®'s lightweight, compact, and flat-packed design renders it exceptionally portable and discreet.
The founders of Dispoze-A-Bowl are entrepreneurs, but musicians as well. Describe your backgrounds in music for us.
Rob and I have both been playing music since the 80s. Rob is a bass player, and I am a drummer. We both played in different bands when we were younger to varying degrees of success but we currently, we play together in a Black Sabbath tribute band called “Tomorrow’s Dream”. We play about a dozen gigs a year, but now that Black Sabbath is hot (and Ozzy is cold) we are starting to get more offers (editor’s note: go check them out!)
Rob Coscia, inventor (as well as enthusiast)
Take us through the process of progressing from idea to actually having a product for sale.
Rob has been inventing stuff since we were kids. His process starts with the idea, then the immediate prototyping of the idea. Prototyping means trying to build the item any way possible. This is where Rob’s engineering mind comes in – he will use the prototyping phase to determine the feasibility of the idea and the manufacturability of the product. If the prototype works well and can be mass produced at a reasonable cost, we will then seek a manufacturing partner or partners to help us develop the product further and eventually do a small production run. This is where we start putting the product in front of anyone we can and test their reactions and listen to their feedback. Based on reactions and feedback, we will either make some changes to the product design and functionality, or we will begin marketing the product and try to start getting some sales.
What was the genesis for deciding to start the company?
The company – our operating company is called Jippy LLC – was started decades ago with Rob’s first invention and patent, which was a foodservice item. The Dispoze-a-Bowl is our most recent product, and we have been focusing all of our efforts and resources on it since 2020.
How do you stay up-to-date on trends in product design and materials?
We attend a shitload of events and trade shows, and we are able to see all the newest cutting-edge trends and decide whether we give a shit or just continue to forge our own path with materials and design.
What individual skills do the two of you bring to a venture such as Dispoze-A-Bowl?
Rob is a brilliant inventor and sales guy. He is a fountain of constant ideas. My skill is keeping Rob believing that I know what I’m doing running the business.
Rob Coscia and Mike Caldarella
Describe a time you had to solve a complex design or engineering problem. What was the challenge, and what was your process for finding a solution?
There have been many of these. One that stands out is the construction of the paper insulator sleeve that wraps around the stainless-steel bowl. The factory was producing the item in a way that made installation tedious and created inconsistent results on the finished product. We were displeased, so we came up with a different way to produce the item, folding it flat like the sleeve of a coffee cup, and showed it to the factory. The factory then changed their production methodology, and a great improvement was made on the overall product.
What materials are usually used in pipe manufacturing, and what makes Dispoze-A-Bowl a better alternative?
A lot of pipes in the inexpensive pricing tier are made from wood or corn cobs. They get dirty quickly, but most people will continue to use them with a harsh taste and smell without cleaning them. Traditional glass pipes also collect resin and should be cleaned regularly for optimal use. The Dispoze-a-Bowl® is made from food-grade paper and stainless steel, and comes three in a pack, so when your pipe gets dirty you can start a new one without any cleaning and without any harsh tastes or smells.
What do you see as the biggest opportunities and challenges in the cannabis accessories market today?
Plain and simple, the biggest opportunity is the ever-growing cannabis marketplace. The biggest challenges are new competitors in the smoking accessories field, fluctuating raw materials costs and of course the evolving regulatory landscape. We are not even allowed to sell our product at many outlets.
Describe the different types of cannabis consumers and their preferences when it comes to smoking accessories.
Great question! I’ll do one better - this is how they often describe themselves: “I’m a joint smoker”. “I’m a bong smoker”. “I only use my glass piece”. “I smoke through an apple”. “I only do edibles”. “I hit dabs, none of this pussy shit”.
Thanks guys!
